A note from your teacher
Cicley Gay
Let me guess: you started your organization because you saw a gap in your community — and you were the one willing to step up and fill it. You're out there doing the work every single day. Running programs. Showing up for young people. Writing grants at midnight. And somewhere in between all of that, someone's telling you that you need a "content strategy" and a "brand voice," as if you have time for that.
I hear you. And I built this school because you deserve more than generic marketing advice that wasn't written with you in mind.
Here's what I know: the organizations that attract sponsors, earn press coverage, and build the kind of community trust that sustains them long-term — they're not necessarily doing more. They're communicating better. They've got a mission message that works without them in the room. They've got a system that turns everyday program moments into content that moves people. They know how to walk into a room — or into a journalist's inbox — and tell their story with clarity and confidence. That's not talent. That's a skill. And it's teachable.
Brand the Mission is the school I wish existed when I started helping organizations like yours get seen and heard. Everything in here, from writing your mission statement, to building your 30-day content calendar, to crafting a media pitch that actually gets opened, is designed to be practical, culturally grounded, and usable this week. No fluff. No corporate jargon. No pretending you have a team of ten when it's just you and your mission and a whole lot of heart.
The executive voice module exists because your visibility as a leader is a strategic asset — and too many Black nonprofit leaders are keeping themselves small when the community, the press, and the funders need to see them step forward. The press positioning module exists because your story belongs in the media, and I want to make sure you know exactly how to put it there. And the content capture system exists because game days, graduations, and field trips are already happening — you just need to know how to turn them into the kind of storytelling that builds trust and opens wallets.
You've already done the hardest part. You built something real. Now let's make sure the world knows it. I'm glad you're here. Let's get to work.
